One of the biggest issues I see with the current MMO player base is that a majority of the players just don't get what they are playing, a Massively Multiplayer Online. Regardless of what game you play, there's always "me me me" players, and it's this type of player that brings down the enjoyability for everyone else.
Generally you find these players dormant, and it's not until a object drops into the loot pool that they switch on giving every excuse known to man to why they should have the loot for their character. There was a great example of one the other day, Ace's Sabatons dropped, and after losing a 3 way free lot on the item he started saying how he wanted it badly and so on.
There is also the constantly active ones that bug every person they know to go forth and waste their time to get him/her some item that in return, they'll get the guarantee that they will be asked again to help. I've known a fair few of these over the years, most cases I was able to just log off and ignore them, but in some rare cases you sometimes would hesitate at the login screen fearing that they would be there to ask you to help within the first moment of world entry.
Worst of all is when you get these types of people in leadership roles. They sit there at the top of the feudalistic system choosing the events based on the loot they want/have priority over getting, while the rest of the Linkshell follows like sheep doing their bidding because they know that if they speak out, they will be disciplined and won't get any of the scraps. If the leaders say jump, they don't expect you to just jump, they expect you to lick the scum off their boots as well. I've seen these shells a lot as well, there's currently one on Lakshmi where the sheep are so blind that even when you tell them what is happening, they tell you that you are mistaken and that "The Leader is good, the Leader is great, we surrender our will as of this date!".
I once had a heated discussion with an associate due to him being "bummed" at his WoW guild disbanding because they lost a healer. When I told him that they should pick up the slack and level a few healers for the group he bluntly refused saying "Why should we?". Seriously he's complaining that his group can't do things because of lack of a job, yet they are unwilling to help themselves.
With the addition of Abyssea for FFXI, we went from having a limited set of obtainable (through hard work) items, to a multitude of items obtainable through little to no effort what so ever. This has turned these players eyes from (o_o) to (O_O). They want everything they can get their hands on now, and when they are done, they'll still want more, so they'll level another character and do the same thing again.
It is because of this mentality that I've decided to gather together a small group of friends and make a close nit, well oiled machine. We'll get all of us what we want, but nobody will get more than the other. I've been contemplating a system based on Kupo Points. I will discuss the system at a later stage, enough ranting for now.
